Artist: Jan Matejko
Year: 1862

This is a reproduction print of the celebrated historical painting “Stańczyk”, created by Polish painter Jan Matejko in 1862. The artwork depicts Stańczyk, the famous court jester of the Polish Renaissance, sitting alone in deep contemplation during a royal celebration. Widely regarded as one of Matejko's most recognizable masterpieces, the painting explores themes of political responsibility, national tragedy and the contrast between public celebration and private sorrow. The original artwork is housed at the National Museum in Warsaw, Poland.

The painting's full historical title refers to Stańczyk during a ball at the court of Queen Bona in 1514, when news arrives of the loss of Smolensk. In that year, the strategically important fortress city of Smolensk fell to the forces of the Grand Duchy of Moscow, during its conflict with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which was united with Poland under the Jagiellonian dynasty. The loss represented a serious political and military setback for the Lithuanian state and its Polish ally.

Matejko portrays Stańczyk dressed in a striking red jester's costume, seated alone in a dimly lit chamber, while a royal celebration continues in the adjoining room. A letter lying on the table announces the loss of Smolensk, providing the historical context for the jester's troubled expression. His posture and distant gaze convey anxiety, disappointment and reflection. Through the open doorway, elegantly dressed courtiers can be seen enjoying the festivities, apparently unaware of or indifferent to the political consequences of the defeat.

The composition creates a powerful contrast between the thoughtful court jester and the carefree royal court. Although Stańczyk traditionally served as an entertainer, Matejko presents him as the only figure fully conscious of the gravity of the situation. The painting reverses conventional expectations: the fool becomes the voice of wisdom, while those entrusted with political authority appear distracted by entertainment. The dramatic lighting, rich red costume and carefully controlled arrangement of the interior reinforce the emotional and symbolic meaning of the scene.

Painted in oil on canvas, the original artwork measures approximately 88 × 120 cm. Created during the period when Poland was partitioned between neighboring powers, the painting also reflects Matejko's concern with the historical causes of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's decline. Stańczyk became a symbol of political awareness, patriotic concern and critical reflection on national history.

Today, “Stańczyk” remains one of the most iconic works of 19th-century Polish historical painting, celebrated for its psychological depth, historical symbolism and powerful portrayal of the relationship between political leadership and national responsibility.
