Artist: Eugène Delacroix
Year: 1824
This is a reproduction print of the famous historical painting “The Massacre at Chios” (Scènes des massacres de Scio), created by Eugène Delacroix in 1824. One of the defining masterpieces of French Romantic painting, the artwork depicts the suffering of Greek civilians during the Chios massacre of 1822, when Ottoman forces devastated the Aegean island during the Greek War of Independence. The original painting is housed at the Musée du Louvre in Paris, France.
The monumental composition portrays Greek men, women and children surrounded by death and destruction, awaiting an uncertain fate following the Ottoman military campaign. In the foreground, exhausted survivors lie on the ground, while others express grief, fear and despair. On the right, an Ottoman cavalryman carries away a captive woman, emphasizing the violence and enslavement associated with the massacre. The devastated landscape stretches into the distance beneath a dramatic Mediterranean sky.
Delacroix's painting is particularly remarkable for its intense emotional expression, dramatic color contrasts and unconventional historical composition. Rather than celebrating a victorious general or a heroic military action, the artist places the suffering of defenseless civilians at the center of the scene. The figures are arranged in separate groups, creating a sense of isolation and helplessness, while the expansive landscape reinforces the scale of the tragedy. This approach helped establish Delacroix as a leading figure of 19th-century Romanticism.
Painted in oil on canvas, the original artwork measures approximately 419 × 354 cm. Exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1824, the painting attracted considerable attention and contributed to European awareness of the Greek struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire. Its powerful portrayal of human suffering, expressive brushwork and historical significance make it one of the most influential examples of Romantic historical painting and 19th-century European art.
